Powerless Words
Over the last two weeks, we've talked about tools to assist you in being more
powerful, and to get the results you want in you life. Today, I'd like to
talk about another tool to boost your personal power - the words we use in our
communication - with ourselves and with others.
When we use certain words, we can actually hold ourselves back from success. The
"power stealing word" I most often hear being used is the word "try". When
you hear someone say they'll "try to get something done by the deadline", do you
think they'll do it? Usually not. You see, your brain KNOWS it doesn't
have to do something when it hears the word try. And you intuitively know
that others don't plan on doing what they say they'll "try" to do either.
Other wimpy, powerless words include words such as "hope, should, could, wish,
ought to, and have to". When you choose to say these words, to others or
to yourself, you are NOT sending the strongest message possible. Quite possibly,
you won't reach your goal.
Powerful words are words like "will, determined to, choose to, and get to".
In any sentence you are currently using powerless words, you can substitute one
of these, and make the message much more powerful, and make your brain commit
to finding a way to meet your goal!
For instance, instead of saying you'll try to join someone for lunch today, either
commit to making it, or say that you won't be able to join them. Either
of these responses sounds so much more powerful! Instead of "trying hard
to pass the test", focus on "getting a 90% or better on the test". Instead
of "hopping you can do 100 sit-ups today", set a definite goal, and say, "Today,
I WILL achieve my goal of 100 sit-ups."
Check yourself today, and listen for all the powerless, wimpy words you, and others,
may be saying… often they are so much a part of your vocabulary, we don't know
we are saying them. Then consciously, replace them with powerful words,
and feel the difference! When you begin to use powerful words, your brain
will actually produce an internal state more focused on attaining your desired
result. When you begin to use powerful words, you will notice more productive
outcomes. You will begin to own your world, your responses to the situations
you encounter, and the results!
